Program Summary
As part of the National School Health and Nutrition Strategy of the Ministry of Education, 2012), Ethiopia implements a national school feeding program by the government as well as development partners. School feeding programs are targeted social safety nets that provide both educational and health benefits to the most vulnerable children, thereby increasing enrolment rates, reducing absenteeism, and improving food security at the household level. School feeding program in Ethiopia provides nutrition support in the form of meals and nutritious snacks to encourage greater and more regular school attendance along with enhancing learning activities: The learning activities include, the first daily school meals provided to primary school children Grade1-8, and capacity building aimed at supporting increased dietary and health practices. Secondly, to support the capacity of the Government to develop a National School Feeding Program (NSFP). Currently, the program reached about 1.74 million students including the Addis Ababa City administration, and expanded from 37 schools in 2012 to 1101 schools in 2020 and reached more schools in 2022.
